The visa application fee is just one part of what you will pay to travel internationally. Many applicants are caught off-guard by the supporting costs — travel insurance, document translations, Visa Application Centre fees, and passport courier charges can add $100–$300 on top of the base fee.
This calculator estimates the full cost of your application based on your passport, destination, purpose, and trip length, so you can budget accurately before committing to non-refundable bookings.
Visa fees are set by governments based on reciprocity. If Country A charges Country B's citizens $150 for a visa, Country B typically charges Country A's citizens a similar amount — this is called fee reciprocity.
This means the same destination can cost vastly different amounts depending on which passport you hold. A US visa costs $185 for most nationalities but is free for citizens of countries that offer reciprocal fee waivers.
Is the visa application fee refunded if my application is rejected?
No. Visa application fees are non-refundable in virtually all cases, regardless of the outcome.
What is a Visa Application Centre (VAC) fee?
Many embassies outsource document collection to private visa centres (VFS Global and TLScontact are the largest). These centres charge a separate service fee of typically $25–$60 on top of the embassy visa fee.
Do I need travel insurance if it is not required by the embassy?
Yes. Even when not mandatory, travel insurance is strongly recommended. A single hospitalisation abroad can cost tens of thousands of dollars.
Can I get the visa fee back if I cancel my trip?
No. The visa fee is for the consular review process, not for entry. If you cancel your trip after paying, the fee is not returned.
What are document apostille costs?
An apostille certifies document authenticity for international use. Some embassies require apostilled documents (birth certificates, police clearances). Costs typically range from $20–$100 per document.
