Visa requirements depend entirely on your passport. The same destination can be visa-free for one nationality and require a full embassy application from another. Visa requirements are not universal, the same destination can have completely different rules depending on your passport nationality. The United States, for example, is visa-free for German citizens but requires a B1/B2 visa for Indian citizens. Clicking any destination above shows you the exact requirement for your specific passport.
Each destination page covers five visa entry types: visa-free (no advance application needed), eVisa (apply online before travel), visa-on-arrival (paid at the border), visa required (embassy appointment before travel), and restricted/no entry. Processing times, fees in USD, required documents, stay limits, and approval rates are shown for each applicable combination.
Policies change regularly, especially for high-traffic routes. We update data monthly from official embassy and government immigration sources. Always confirm your specific requirement with the official embassy or consulate of your destination before booking non-refundable travel.
Visa-Free
No advance application required. You arrive at the border or airport with your valid passport and are admitted for a set period, typically 30–90 days depending on the destination. Most commonly between wealthy nations with strong bilateral agreements.
eVisa (Electronic Visa)
Apply online through the government portal of the destination country, usually 24–72 hours before travel. No embassy visit required. Common for countries like India, Turkey, Kenya, Sri Lanka, and Ethiopia. Approval is emailed directly to the applicant.
Visa on Arrival
Obtainable at the airport or land border upon arrival. You typically need a passport photo, cash for the fee, and proof of onward travel. Common in countries like the Maldives, Cambodia, and parts of Africa. Always confirm availability before travel as policies change.
Visa Required
You must apply at the embassy or consulate of the destination country before travelling. This typically involves submitting documents (financial proof, travel itinerary, accommodation), attending a biometric appointment, and waiting for processing, which can take 2 to 12 weeks depending on the embassy.
Passport validity requirements
Most countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay. Some require only 3 months, but airlines may still deny boarding if your passport expires within 6 months. Always check the specific destination rule.
The Schengen 90/180-day rule
Visa-free visitors to the Schengen Area can stay for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, across all 27 Schengen countries combined, not per country. Overstaying can result in deportation and entry bans.
Transit visa requirements
Passing through an airport in a country can require a transit visa even if you never leave the airport. This is common in the UK and some Schengen countries for certain passport nationalities. Always check transit requirements when connecting.
Entry vs. visa validity
A visa is valid for entry up to its expiry date. Once you enter, you are typically allowed to stay for the duration granted at the border, which may be shorter than the visa validity. Confirm the allowed stay on your entry stamp, not on the visa itself.
How do I find out what visa I need for a specific country?
Select your destination from the list above and you will see the visa requirement for every passport nationality. Alternatively, use the Visa Check tool to enter your passport country and destination for an instant result.
What is the Schengen Area?
The Schengen Area is a group of 27 European countries that have eliminated internal border controls, allowing free movement between them. A single Schengen visa or visa-free entry grants access to all member states. Schengen countries include Germany, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Greece, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Poland, Czech Republic, and others.
What does "visa-free" actually mean?
Visa-free entry means citizens of the specified nationality can enter that country without applying for a visa in advance. They present their valid passport at the border and are admitted for a set period, usually 30, 60, or 90 days. No fee, no paperwork, and no embassy visit is required before arrival.
Can visa requirements change after I book my flights?
Yes. Governments can and do change visa policies with relatively short notice, especially in response to diplomatic developments or security situations. Always recheck requirements closer to your travel date and not only at the time of booking. We recommend verifying with the official embassy website within 2 weeks of departure.
What documents do I typically need to enter a country?
At a minimum: a valid passport with sufficient remaining validity (usually 6 months beyond stay). For visa-required destinations, you also need the approved visa, return ticket, proof of accommodation, and evidence of sufficient funds. Individual destination pages on VizaHunt list the specific documents required for each passport nationality.
Do I need a transit visa when connecting through a country?
Sometimes. Transit visa requirements depend on your passport nationality and the transit country. The UK requires an Airport Transit Visa (ATV) for citizens of many countries even if they do not leave the international transit zone. Some Schengen countries have similar requirements. Always check transit visa requirements when booking connecting flights.
