The US passport offers visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to around 186 destinations. Here is the full breakdown by region, plus where Americans still need a visa.
The United States passport currently ranks joint 8th globally, granting visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to approximately 186 destinations. While no longer in the top five, it remains one of the most widely accepted travel documents in the world — covering all of Western Europe, most of Asia, and the entire Western Hemisphere with ease.
Europe — Schengen Area (27 Countries)
US passport holders can enter all 27 Schengen countries without a visa for stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This covers Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, and more.
Note: ETIAS authorisation (€7, valid 3 years) is now required before Schengen travel. Apply at travel.ec.europa.eu — it takes minutes and is valid for multiple trips.
The United Kingdom is separate from Schengen. Americans can visit the UK visa-free for up to 6 months, but an Electronic Travel Authorisation (£10) is required in advance.

- Iran: Visa required; independent tourism is highly restricted for US citizens
- North Korea: Entry not permitted for US passport holders

Why the US Passport Has Slipped in Global Rankings
The US passport ranked in the global top 5 for most of the 2000s. The decline to joint 8th reflects fewer new bilateral waiver agreements compared to European and Asian nations that have negotiated aggressively. The US also applies reciprocity more strictly — when a country charges Americans for visas, the US rarely drops requirements for that country's citizens in return.
The result: the US passport is weaker for travel to South Asia, parts of Africa, and Central Asia than comparable European passports.
Practical Notes for American Travelers
For Europe, get your ETIAS before every trip to Schengen and your ETA before every UK trip — both are cheap, fast, and valid for multiple years. For India, apply for the eVisa online at least 4 days before travel. For Canada, the eTA is required even when driving across the border.
Requirements based on US State Department, IATA Travel Centre, and official embassy sources. Verify before travel.
