The UK Standard Visitor Visa allows stays of up to 6 months for tourism and business. This guide covers the full application process, required documents, and how to avoid common refusals.
The UK Standard Visitor Visa is the primary route for nationals who need permission to enter the United Kingdom for tourism, business visits, short study, or visiting family and friends. Since Brexit, UK visa policy operates entirely independently from the European Union. This guide covers the complete process.
Who Needs a UK Visa?
Citizens of many countries can visit the UK without a visa for up to 6 months, including all EU and EEA nationals, Americans, Canadians, Australians, and Japanese nationals.
Nationals who require a Standard Visitor Visa include citizens of India, China, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Ghana, and many other countries. Check the UK government's official list at gov.uk/check-uk-visa.
Note: Even visa-exempt nationals now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA, £10) before travel.

What UK Visa Officers Look For
UK visa decisions focus on one central question: will this person leave the UK when they are supposed to?
To address this, your application must demonstrate:
- **Financial self-sufficiency**: You have enough money to fund your trip without working illegally or relying on public funds.
- **Clear purpose**: You have a genuine reason for visiting consistent with a Standard Visitor.
- **Strong home ties**: Employment, family, property, or other obligations that make returning home certain.
- **No immigration history concerns**: Prior visa refusals, overstays, or deportations from the UK or other countries significantly weaken an application.
Common Refusal Reasons
Inadequate financial evidence: Insufficient bank balance, inconsistent income, or a large unexplained deposit shortly before application.
Weak ties to home country: Young, single applicants without property or dependants are at higher risk and need to compensate with stronger financial and employment evidence.
Inconsistent application: Details in your form do not match your documents or stated purpose.
Previous UK or other visa refusals: Must be declared truthfully. Undeclared refusals discovered later result in automatic refusal and potential bans.
After a Refusal — Reapplying
Unlike US visas, UK Standard Visitor Visa refusals do not carry a formal waiting period. You can reapply immediately. However, you must address the specific reason(s) stated in your refusal letter with stronger evidence.
There is no appeal for Standard Visitor Visa refusals — only administrative review (for process errors) or reapplication.
UK Entry on Arrival
Having a valid visa does not guarantee entry — UK Border Force officers can still refuse entry if they believe you are not a genuine visitor. Carry copies of your supporting documents (itinerary, hotel bookings, return flights, proof of funds) in your hand luggage. You may be asked about them at the border.
All fees are current as of 2026. Always verify at gov.uk before applying.
